Pensacola International Airport will begin work next week to replace one of two airport escalators, kicking off renovations to modernize airport facilities and enhance the overall travel experience for Pensacola residents and visitors.

The escalator replacement is the first of several improvements planned for the airport, with long-term plans to include:

  • Expand and upgrade current passenger terminal
  • Additional concourse
  • Additional parking facilities
  • Expanded security screening checkpoint
  • Additional concessions

Pensacola International Airport is working to secure funding for the additional improvements, which will be announced as they move forward.

“We are always looking for ways to improve our passengers’ experience so they can Fly Easy, and that’s what is driving these plans,” Airport Director Matt Coughlin said. “The escalators are often a topic of discussion for travelers, and in much need of an upgrade. Plans have been in the works to rebuild the escalators for some time.”

The down escalator will be out of service during the replacement project, which is expected to be completed before the peak summer travel season. The stairs, elevators and the up escalator will remain accessible to passengers during renovations. The up escalator is scheduled for replacement this fall.

“It’s a testament to our community as a whole that we are able to make these improvements, because more people want to visit here, and more businesses are calling our area home,” Coughlin said. “We are really excited about the opportunity to grow and modernize the airport alongside all the residents, businesses and organizations that make the Gulf Coast a great place to be.”

As an enterprise of the City of Pensacola, Pensacola International Airport does not receive money from taxes paid to the City of Pensacola. Modernization and expansion plans will be funded by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration, the Florida Department of Transportation, airport revenue, federal infrastructure funds, and other airport-specific grants or bond funds.

The Year that Was…2022

It’s hard to believe another year has passed, so we thought it would be fun to look back at 2022 and recap some of the past year’s highlights.

At the beginning of 2022, PNS and the airline industry were experiencing a major rebound from the pandemic. Like many businesses, the airlines were trying to keep up with the massive ebb and flow of travel demand.

Covid, Masks, and Babies…Oh My!

Despite the uncertainty and onset of the Delta and Omicron variants (remember those?), we saw strong travel demand in the first quarter of 2022. Our friends at Pensacon brought some intergalactic fun to the community, and several airlines announced new seasonal routes to and from Pensacola.

By spring of this year, it was becoming clear that things were returning to normal…or even better than normal. We had a very strong Spring Break season, and in April, the Department of Homeland Security lifted the mask mandate. Airline passengers and flight crews alike all breathed a collective sigh of relief.

Shortly after this announcement, Pensacola played host to newborn baby “Sky” who was delivered on a Frontier Airlines flight from Denver to Orlando. Little Sky decided she was ready to join the world and was delivered on the plane in mid-air. The pilot radioed the situation to PNS and requested an emergency stop. Our operations dispatcher, Dave Covell, coordinated paramedics, police, and a Delta ground crew – all at 4:30am in the morning – to allow the Frontier plane to land and for EMS to get mother and baby safely to the hospital.

Then Came Summer…

…and in the words of Forrest Gump, we…were…running!

Fortunately, we opened a new surface economy lot in May 2022. This added 300+ parking spaces, including 11 electric vehicle charging stations. Little did we know just how much we would need that extra parking!

By the time summer arrived, we were shattering records, eclipsing even the rebound numbers from the same time period in 2021. While the additional traffic caused some challenges for airlines and their staffing nationally, here at PNS we continued to adjust and adapt, making sure anyone traveling with us could Fly Easy.

In addition, ST Engineering continued construction through the summer on Hangar Two, part of the four-hangar airplane maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) complex that, when complete, will create over 1,700 aviation jobs.

Is it Fall Yet?

Fall brought some cooler weather (at least for a bit) and a new Customs and Border Protection office at our general aviation facility. This will allow us to process more international travelers coming by private planes to the area, and expands our relationship with that important agency.

Luckily, we avoided any major hurricane impacts, but we were prepared for any weather problems, and in fact, helped to redirect and host planes that were being moved away from the storms in south and central Florida.

Soon, we’ll be enjoying an updated and renovated Chick-Fil-A inside the airport. This passenger favorite closed down in October for renovations and equipment upgrades which will bring a wider selection of menu items to PNS. (We’re not sure if that means peach milkshakes this summer…but we’ll let you know as soon as we find out!)

And that brings us to now, and to “thank you.”

We’re not the largest airport you’ll ever use (although we have plans to expand…more on that next year!), but we take our promise seriously to help you Fly Easy. We are grateful to be your Gateway to the Gulf Coast, whether you are just visiting or coming back home.

So, from all of us at Pensacola International Airport, have a wonderful holiday season, safe travels, and we look forward to Flying Easy with you sometime soon!

Following the April 18 ruling by U.S. District Court Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle vacating the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s mask mandate on public transportation, Pensacola International Airport is no longer requiring passengers to wear masks in the airport.

“While we will not be requiring masks at PNS, we do know this situation may change based on any Federal action, and some destinations and perhaps even some air carriers may continue to require masks,” said Matt Coughlin, Airport Director. “To ensure you can continue to Fly Easy, we recommend that all passengers confirm with their airline and their destination for any mask requirements and prepare accordingly.”

Pensacola International Airport recommends that passengers monitor the situation closely and review any state, local, or national mask requirements for their connecting airports and final destinations. Passengers should also confirm mask regulations with their particular air carrier.

The numbers are in: Passenger travel through Pensacola International Airport has climbed back to pre-pandemic levels. In fact, Pensacola’s airport has broken its own record, beating 2019’s numbers by an increase of 4%. From January to December 2021, 87,197 more passengers passed through PNS when compared to 2019, for a total of 2,324,044 passengers. The increase in passenger traffic is due in large part to the increase in tourism throughout Pensacola and the surrounding communities. Pensacola International Airport has consistently averaged above national numbers throughout the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. The summer of 2021 saw an increase of 25% more passengers when compared to 2019, the previous record-breaking year for PNS, with 2,236,847 total passengers.“The tourism industry and our airline partners understood that Pensacola and the destinations offered through PNS are highly desired destinations for travelers and vacationers,” said Airport Director Matt Coughlin. “Our teams proudly did our part to create a fly easy experience for each traveler, welcoming them to the Gateway to the Gulf Coast.”Not only did Pensacola have a record-breaking year, but it was also hailed as having among the lowest fares in the nation. According to the latest ValuePenguin study — which examines fluctuations in airfare since the pandemic struck — average fare costs across the U.S. remain almost 20% lower than they were prior to COVID-19. The two U.S. airports where the average cost of departing flights remains the lowest are New Jersey’s Newark International and Pensacola International Airport, where flights cost passengers 30% less on average than they did pre-COVID.“These announcements speak to the many great things being done at the airport and in Pensacola. When compared to pre-COVID, we have more flights, more airlines, and lower costs,” says Pensacola Mayor Grover Robinson. “It is amazing for me to see where we are and I am excited about the future of Pensacola’s airport.”ValuePenguin researchers calculated average airfare costs based upon data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics’ Passenger Origin and Destination Survey. The figures have been adjusted for inflation and are based on domestic itinerary fees, including taxes and fees. Currently, Pensacola International Airport has more than 20 destinations offered by eight airlines including Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, United Airlines, Southwest, Spirit, Silver Airways, Frontier, and Boutique Air.To learn more about Pensacola International Airport, the great destinations and to book your next flight, visit flypensacola.com.

PENSACOLA, FL –  Boston, also affectionately known as the “Hub,” is now connected to the Gateway to the Gulf Coast. American Airlines will begin offering service between Logan International Airport and Pensacola International Airport in June 2022, bringing even more nonstop destination options to Pensacola travelers. This route is a part of the Northeast Alliance between American Airlines and JetBlue, Logan Airport’s largest carrier.

The Northeast Alliance aims to bring more flight options to passengers in Boston and New York through codeshare flights, new routes, expanded schedules, and reciprocal benefits through rewards programs.

Passengers on this weekly flight will take off aboard an American Eagle Embraer 175 regional jet. Flights will be on Saturdays and depart Boston at 9 a.m. (EST) and arrive in Pensacola at 11:30 a.m. (CST). Flights depart Pensacola at noon (CST) and arrive in Boston at 4 p.m. (EST).

“We are more than pleased to be a part of the Northeast Alliance expansion,” Airport Director Matt Coughlin said. “Boston in particular will expand our reach into the northeast, thus giving our community new avenues to visit New England.”

The added route is a part of several new routes announced from Boston including Halifax, Nova Scotia (YHZ), Louisville (SDF), Memphis (MEM), and Traverse City (TVC).

“This connection to Boston is continued evidence that Pensacola’s airport is truly the Gateway to the Gulf Coast,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. “Our team at the airport continues to improve, beat the odds, and offer exciting opportunities for those who want to travel this year.”

Logan International Airport is an international hub that serves Massachusetts and all of central New England. It is large and busy, with many direct flights to and from major national and international airports.

Airport, City and Hyatt Hotel Collaborate on Angel Tree Campaign for Local Families

After a record-setting year for air travel, the team at Pensacola International Airport, City Hall, and the Airport Hyatt Hotel are working together to give back to the community this holiday season.

Employees at all three organizations teamed up to help several Pensacola area children in need by purchasing Christmas gifts through the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. Between the three organizations, 27 children and their families have been supported.

The Angel Tree campaign is a way to give back to the Pensacola community and to help area families who otherwise would have struggled or been unable to provide gifts to their children this holiday season.

“With a global pandemic, Hurricane Sally, and the damage to the Pensacola Bay Bridge, the past year has been a real challenge for everyone, including the airport,” Airport Director Matt Coughlin said. “While much of our economy is back, including air travel and tourism, there are still many families in our community who need help.”.

“We’re glad to be able to give back to these local families and hopefully make their holiday season brighter,” Mayor Grover Robinson said. I’m grateful for the partnerships between our airport, City Hall, the Airport Hyatt and everyone with the Angel Tree campaign who worked together to make this initiative possible.”

The Airport and Hyatt Place have collaborated on projects before, and the Angel Tree effort is just an extension of that relationship.

“We’ve always enjoyed a great working relationship with the airport staff, often coordinating with them on special events, community programs, and of course, parking,” said Nikki Williams, Director of Sales. “This Angel Tree effort is another way for us to partner with the airport and the city to brighten up the holidays for some special families in our area.”

Through the Angel Tree program, the Salvation Army helps put new clothes and toys under the tree for 1 million children across the United States who usually have to go without Christmas gifts.

To learn more about the program, visit the Salvation Army’s website.

Pensacola Airport Launches 2nd Annual Holiday Gift Guide

Airport Employees Make Suggestions for Traveling Santas

(November 23, 2021) Pensacola, Fla. — For the second year in a row, Santa’s elves at Pensacola International Airport are sharing their favorite gift ideas for holiday travelers. The PNS Holiday Gift Guide launches today, with team members from across the airport recommending locally-owned gifts to give, ship, or carry-on during the holiday season.

The Gift Guide is an effort by the airport leaders and employees to support locally-owned businesses, and to highlight gift ideas for people visiting the area.

“Whether it’s the height of the beach season or the holiday season, the airport is the Gateway to the Gulf Coast. Thousands of passengers come through the airport each day, to visit their families here or to go see their family elsewhere. The Gift Guide is a great way for us to highlight all that Pensacola has to offer, from restaurants and retailers to services and experiences,” said Airport Director Matthew Coughlin

For the past month, PNS leaders have been collecting gift ideas from airport employees and support teams, including members of the TSA, baggage handlers, rental car companies, and airline employees.

“Even though the airlines or rental car companies or concession companies may not be headquartered here, the people who are helping with your bags, your security screening, or your coffee do live here,” said Marketing Manger Lewis Garvin. “We know that we are the first and last thing people see when they visit or leave Pensacola, and we want to celebrate all that is great about the Gulf Coast, and support our local businesses at the same time.”

This year’s Gift Guide includes Glamping at Coldwater Gardens, Theatre Tickets to PLT, Coffee at Deluna Coffee, sugary goodness at Bubba’s Sweet Shop, and much more.

The PNS Holiday Gift Guide can be found on the airport’s website at www.FlyPensacola.com/holiday-gift-guide-2021, or on social media: @FlyPensacola.
